“I strive to create original high quality designs that honor their unique setting which represents a sensitivity to environmental sustainability and that reflects the individual character of the Owner’s lifestyle.”
As a child growing up in 1950’s Venice, Florida, most of my free time was spent outdoors – either swimming in the Gulf of Mexico and Donna/Roberts Bay or hiking and canoeing or camping around the Myakka River basin. My avid outdoors appreciation continued after college when I moved to “wild west” Idaho, were weekend mountain hiking, rafting, and climbing furthered my connection to the wondrous environment. My senior thesis at the Univ. of Florida consisted of a sustainable community development, totally solar powered and constructed of rammed earthen walls.
I have tried to incorporate energy saving design features throughout my 35 year Architectural career, whether residential or commercial buildings. For example, I started using radiant barriers in attics as early as 1980. My penchant for generous overhangs and window shading is a hallmark of my “Florida” style. In the mid nineties I ventured to Costa Rica to design and build a tropical hacienda, completely “off the grid.” This truly “green” house used locally harvested timber from fallen trees, pumped water from a spring, without electricity (gravity function), solar panels for domestic hot water heating, and solar photovoltaic system for a 12 volt electric system.
